During Semester One I studied at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Here I was introduced to Soft Sculpture, which has become important in my practice. My current line of enquiry is period art which initially started from a brief on Ready-Mades. I liked the idea of tactile, wearable art - as an extension of myself. The idea to make period jewellery came to me whilst in the toilet being discrete about my period. I considered why women feel the need to hide this natural function of the human body. I made tampon earrings and a sanitary towel headband knowing it would make some of my audience laugh and some feel uncomfortable, posing a question; why does something that is so normal make you feel this way? Exposing people to these ideas and concepts will hopefully educate them and normalise these images.
My artistic influences were Louise Bourgeois, Doretha Tanning and Ron Mueck. Claus Oldenburg’s work was of huge significance, especially his large soft sculptures such as Giant BLT (1963) and Soft Toilet (1966). I was inspired by how he disrupts the usual behaviour of everyday objects and the bizarre upscaling forces the viewer to acknowledge and question its existence.
